Capture the Legacy Data Faster and Accurate Through Reverse Engineering

What Is Legacy Data?

Legacy data is the collection of all the information which is not being used or managed at present but stored physical or electronic format. The legacy data usually includes a huge volume of data bundled in files, the purposes of saving these files are disaster recovery, business needs, retention and preservation processes.

Challenges of Migrating Legacy Data

It is a very common issue that many organizations or individuals face. When an organization migrates from one platform to another the biggest problem arrives is not being able to migrate all the data that was being used before to this new system to continue. There are some challenges an organization can face while migration of legacy data:

Legacy archive APIs

Legacy archive’ built- in application programming interface (API) slows down the process of migration and many times corrupts the files that are being extract.

Exchange Web Services (EWS) throttling

While using EWS for migration one should be aware that it enables you to migrate the data only at the rate of 400 GB per day that can be a big issue for large enterprises who have more than 20, 50 or 100 TB of legacy data.

Internet throttling

In case, one is fine with the speed of 400 GB per day for legacy data migration, another problem can appear is the support of the internet link for the data transfer. The shortage of bandwidth can always be a big issue for migration of data through internet.

Non-Exchange data formats

Some organizations store their data in a format (Enterprise Vault, SourceOne or Autonomy archive) that does not allow the data to migrate to the other systems. This happens mainly with the traditional archive migration tools that either do not support the ingestion of data.

Journal archives

The single-instanced journalized data from the legacy email system do not support many latest version of platforms. Traditional archive migration tools don’t convert journal archives to mailbox archives.

Reverse Engineering Helps in Resolving the Issue to Restore the Legacy Data

Reverse engineering is referred to the method of collecting data from any equipment, object or from a system via analyzing the system structure, its functions and operations, especially when there is no virtual data available analyze. The two main steps of the method are de-deconstructing an object and analyzing its workings in detail.

In case of legacy system reverse engineering process majorly takes these two steps. Firsts, its recover the complete details/specifications of the database. Secondly, it uses the huge variety on the information sources, at the same time ranging the data definition language (DDL) code analysis to data analysis, program behavior observation, ontology alignment, and program code analysis.
